A regular day at BA

To start the day, the kids in Bahay Aurora wake up at 6am. The day will start with an exercise. The 30 minutes running along the premises of Bahay Aurora. This will strengthen the immune system of the kids to fight different kinds of diseases. After the running exercise they will have a water break to replenish the lost water in their bodies. Each kid has a different task in BA, they were taught to be responsible doing task similar to what they do at home. Usually unit 1 and unit 3 Do these tasks.

 

 

There is a program of activity for each day after doing task they will have their breakfast. And they will have an activity to do like trampoline, skipping ropes and board games. After this activity they will have their lunch, they will have a rest after lunch they can do nap time. In the Afternoon they will have word puzzle, sudoku and coloring.

They will clean the surrounding in the afternoon each one has a task to perform. After this they will have to take a bath and be ready for dinner. During the night the activity is to be creative and to perform art activity. This is one of the activity schedules on this day in Bahay Aurora during summer, each day has a different set of activity to perform.

 

 

The kids are given different sets of activity each day so they can enhance their minds and develop their creativeness through these activities. This is done during summer not only helping them in their needs but also to provide them with activities so their summer will be meaningful and they can enjoy. This is how a day is spent in Bahay Aurora.

 

 

Tom’s story

My story began in 1992 at the age of 2 when my mother, a Filipino native from the province of Leyte, became the very first donator of children’s home Bahay Aurora in the Philippines. The children’s home is an initiative by my parents’ dear friends Herke (from Leeuwarden) and his wife Arlene (from Baras, Rizal, Philippines), who wanted to help street children and orphans in the Philippines after getting inspired by the dreams of Arlene’s mother ‘Inang’ Aurora Ramos Santiago.

I was raised in the Netherlands in a family of four with one older brother and we visited the Philippines not that much. It was quite expensive at the time but somehow we managed it to find our way to our Manila-based family even now and then. My mother’s generation of brothers and sisters were the first one to finish their college and university degree which made it possible for me and my cousins to grow up with education as well. As a little kid I was fascinated by my cousins who were constantly working their way up in school to change their lives for good. Without any education in the Philippines you have to come from really, really far to have a normal life. I remember my elder cousin Emmylou crying in the car as we dropped her off at high school in 1995. She was so stressed about her school results and she asked my father to help her, because she didn’t want to end up without any money in the Philippines.

In July 2005, I was 15 years old at the time, we organized a big family holiday to the island of Boracay. With 20 family members and friends we traveled on a 12 hour boat trip to Boracay. The island was not yet overwhelmed by tourists from all over the world and everyday we had the beach for ourselves. What was supposed to be a memorable happy holiday turned out to become a life changing family trauma.

On an early sunny morning me and my 3 cousins Mikko, Emmylou and Warren decided to have a 7 A.M. wake up swim in the crystal blue water at White Beach. The rest of the family was in our apartment preparing breakfast. We jumped off a boat, around 20 meters from the coast. With low tide at the time, you could see the whitest sand trough the water at a depth of 1,5 meters. As we were jumping from the boat and waited in the water for the rest to join, my cousin Warren didn’t jump. He dove straight in to the water. Slowly he floated up to the surface with his back turned to my eyes and the upcoming hot sun in the sky. I started joking that it was not funny to scare your cousins like this. From joking around I started screaming and turned him towards me. He didn’t move. As my cousins Mikko and Emmylou started to panic, a family friend who was a Manila policeman, kind of ‘ran’ 20 meters in to the water and pulled Warren out of my hands. I was clearly in shock and couldn’t move an inch. I still don’t know how I got back to the beach but I remember a 40 year old American man ran across the beach to give my cousin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It was too late. My dear cousin died in my arms on that peaceful Boracay morning. That same day my cousin Warren and his parents were transported by plane back to Manila, as the rest of the family followed one day later on again a 12 hour boat trip. It changed our lives for good and we had to recover from this tragedy as a family.

Two days after the funeral my parents took me and my brother to their friends Herke and Arlene who were managing the Bahay Aurora children’s home just 2 hours outside Manila. I was clearly traumatized and I had trouble understanding what was going on in the children’s home. I tried to talk to the kids but I couldn’t. I ended up hanging out with my brother and their daughter Angelique, watching movies in their house on the compound. Herke and Arlene showed their respect by telling us how sorry they are for our loss. Somehow it was comforting and I started to relax. I really appreciated the warm welcome from the staff and the kids and we stayed for one night and two days.

When returning to the Netherlands I moved on with my life. The second year of high school was about to start. I didn’t quite talk about the accident. One year later I met my girlfriend Hansje and after high school, just before I graduated in Applied Psychology in Leiden, I wanted to go back to Bahay Aurora. I had so many mixed memories about this place, but somehow I wanted to be there for the children. I wanted to do something with everything I learned and I was sure Bahay Aurora was the perfect place to give back to the country that has inspired me in so many different ways.

I remember walking in to Bahay Aurora in the year of 2012 as an intern and the first conversation I had with the kids was with a 9 year old little girl, her name is Merly. She showed me that she could talk a little bit Dutch and that she is really good in sports. She was in Bahay Aurora for already 1 year together with her 2 elder sisters. That same night we had diner and another girl, who still lives in Bahay Aurora, just missed out on the last piece of rice. To my surprise all the other kids voluntarily came up to her to give a piece of their plate. Can you imagine this when you realize these kids grew up on a garbage belt in the slumps of Manila, without any food for days? From this moment I knew this was a magical place and after my time as an intern, I returned to Bahay Aurora every year, sometimes even twice. The staff became really close friends and I started praying for the future of the kids. It feels like I grew up with most of the kids for the time they were admitted in the children’s home. They taught me everything about life and that love will get you through the day. As long as you are passionated about the future, you can make it.

Around christmas 2016, Herke and Arlene who were still very close friends of my parents, visited us in our home in the Netherlands. With Herke I talked about the future of Bahay Aurora and how ‘we’ can make sure that in the upcoming years Bahay Aura will continue saving lives. How we can provide them with education, food, shelter and more importantly: a family. We have to make sure that our Bahay Aurora children will give their very own children the chance to go to school as well. With education they can change the world. They will raise better families and they will always fight against poverty in an acceptable way. With education they can help people who are in need, even when they don’t want anything in return.

In 2017 I entered the Bahay Aurora board as a volunteer, which is based in the Netherlands. I felt so inspired and motivated to help the board to make a difference for the kids. Since 2012 I followed the kids growing up from street children to mature passionated students. Like Eric and Rodel, who were found in a box on a Manila garbage belt and now are college graduates and still very close friends of mine. Or family should I say.

Right now I’m sitting in a plane and every year I’m flying back to the Philippines. It breaks my heart knowing that I have to leave again after 7 days. I am blessed for everything I have in life and I will continue doing everything I can for the kids of Bahay Aurora. Not alone, but together with everyone from the Bahay Aurora family: the staff, the kids, the volunteers, but also with my friends, sponsors and my very own family in the Netherlands. Thank you to everyone who is involved with the mission of Bahay Aurora. It really changed my life, forever.

Begeleid Kamerbewonen!

We zijn bijna klaar met het gebouw dat gebruikt zal worden voor het Begeleid Kamerbewonen!

Het doel is om de 18+ kinderen die te oud zijn voor Bahay Aurora, alsnog onderdak te bieden zodat ze in een gezonde omgeving hun school af kunnen maken. Ons doel: de armoedecirkel doorbreken. Deze kids begeleiden we naar hun eerste baan.

De grown ups (voornamelijk meisjes) zijn al zo enthousiast om hier in te trekken! Het lijkt soms wel of ze de komende 10 jaar helemaal weten wat hun  plan is.

De bouwvakkers werken hard door, want door de tyfoon liepen we vorige maand wat vertraging op. Ze werken vandaag zelfs, ondanks het feit dat het een nationale feestdag is (Bonifacio Day). Vandaag wordt de elektriciteit geïnstalleerd en volgende week schilderen we de muur met betekenisvolle kunst (zie laatste foto).

Hou dit project goed in de gaten! Dank aan iedereen die dit mogelijk heeft gemaakt!

 

Kerstkaarten aan de kinderen van Bahay Aurora

Vanuit Nederland heeft het snelgroeiende bedrijf  jellow.nl  (een online platform voor freelancers en opdrachtgevers) uit Naarden-Vesting maar liefst 40 persoonlijke kerstkaarten geschreven voor elk kind in het kindertehuis. Vorige week nam Tom van der Veer, werkzaam bij Jellow en tevens bestuurslid van Bahay Aurora, de kerstkaarten mee tijdens een bezoek aan het kindertehuis op de Filipijnen.

De kids vonden het uiteraard fantastisch, want het is natuurlijk erg bijzonder als je een persoonlijk kaartje ontvangt die helemaal aan de andere kant van de wereld is geschreven. De kids namen dan ook goed de tijd om een uitgebreide kerstkaart terug te sturen die inmiddels weer goed is ontvangen in Nederland!

Kerstfeest 2018

Bij het kerstfeest staat het thema familie, liefde, dankbaarheid en inspiratie centraal en dat is goed terug te zien in de foto’s!

Als special guest ontvingen we ook nog de acteur en lokale ster ‘The Undertaker’. Zijn boodschap: “Don’t bully and never give up on your dreams.”

Niet alleen voor de kids geweldig, maar ook de staff en bezoekers stonden te springen. Wat een feest!

Nationale Vrijwilligersdag

We vieren in Nederland vandaag Nationale Vrijwilligersdag!

Door de Verenigde Naties is officieel 5 december uitgeroepen tot de ‘Internationale Vrijwilligersdag’ (International Volunteer Day). In Nederland wordt de Nationale Vrijwilligersdag echter op 7 december gehouden (i.v.m. Sinterklaas).

Dit is een door de vrijwilligersorganisaties van de Verenigde Naties ingestelde dag om wereldwijd het vrijwilligerswerk respect te tonen en te promoten. Sinds 1986.

Bij Bahay Aurora zijn we ontzettend blij met onze vrijwilligers! Iedereen draagt op eigen manier zijn of haar steentje bij.

Als we terug kijken naar de afgelopen 27 jaar zijn onze vrijwilligers de reden dat we nieuwe mensen ontmoeten die geloven in onze organisatie. Niet alleen de vrijwilligers op locatie op de Filipijnen, maar ook het bestuur in Nederland. Op de foto hieronder zien jullie maar een kleine greep uit het gehele vrijwilligersnetwerk van Bahay Aurora.

Samen zetten we ons elke dag in om voor de allerarmste kinderen van de Filipijnen het verschil te maken.

Bedankt voor alles en we kijken er naar uit om de komende jaren nog veel samen te betekenen voor de kids!

Uitje naar Ocean Park

De kinderen werden al om 04.00 wakker omdat ze zo veel zin hadden in de tour. Toen ik aanschoof voor het ontbijt (om 06.00) waren de kinderen al klaar om te gaan. Om 09.00 zouden we pas vertrekken dus de kinderen moesten nog even geduld hebben.

 

 

Vooraf waren alle voorbereidingen getroffen voor de kinderen die wagenziek zouden worden en volgens de medewerkers zouden bijna alle kinderen wagenziek zijn. Het leek mij wat overdreven maar vooraf gaf ik alle kinderen een pilletje tegen wagenziekte, en in de twee busjes lagen allemaal plastic zakjes en tissues voor als de kinderen moesten overgeven. Nou het was geen overbodige luxe want ondanks de pilletjes vooraf was denk ik de helft van de kinderen aan het spugen.

 

 

Eenmaal aangekomen in Manila stonden de sponsoren op ons te wachten in een park met een lunch voor alle kids. De kinderen kregen nog een zakje snoep met wat speelgoed erin. Als kers op de taart kwam er een ijscoman voorbij en mochten alle kids ook nog een ijsje. Wat ik confronterend vond waren de straatkinderen die op ons af kwamen in het park en smeekten om eten en drinken. Ik dacht het hadden net zo goed de kids uit Bahay Aurora kunnen zijn. Het was echt naar om te zien want ze zagen er heel slecht uit. Gelukkig hadden er nog wat eten over dat we aan hun konden geven. Nadat iedereen zijn lunch op had en naar het toilet was geweest konden we eindelijk naar OCEAN PARK.

 

 

 

 

Als eerste gingen we naar een spa. De kinderen moesten met hun voeten in een bad gaan zitten en vervolgens kwamen er allemaal visjes aan hun voeten knabbelen. Hilarisch om te zien, want sommige kinderen schrokken heel erg en bij sommige kietelde het. Je kon ook precies zien wie er vieze voeten had, want daar waren de meeste visjes haha. Toen iedereen schone voeten had gingen we verder naar een soort kinderboerderij. Er waren hamsters, konijnen, cavia’s, eenden en parkieten die je eten kon geven (zie foto). De derde activiteit was een zeeleeuwenshow. De kinderen vonden het helemaal geweldig, ze applaudiseerde en konden niet stoppen met lachen. Te lief om te zien. Vervolgens gingen we naar het aquarium waarin je allerlei vissen kon zien en door een tunnel kon lopen van water. De kinderen hadden vooraf de opdracht gekregen om zo veel mogelijk vissoorten op te schrijven. Ze waren dus een ook druk bezig om vissoorten te zoeken. Verder zijn we nog langs een reptielen afdeling geweest, een speelgoed afdeling, een kerstmis afdeling (waar sneeuw uit het plafond kwam vallen, zie foto) en een kwallen afdeling.

 

 

Rond 17.30 zijn we weer terug gegaan met de busjes. Helaas waren weer veel kinderen ziek geworden op de terugweg. Zelfs al bij het zien van de busjes moesten kinderen overgeven. Iedereen kwam dan ook helemaal uitgeput weer terug in Bahay Aurora. Ik denk, nee ik weet wel zeker dat de kids een geweldig dag hebben gehad ondanks de heen en terugreis.

& daar word ik natuurlijk weer helemaal gelukkig van!
